Blooming Onion

A Blooming Onion, also known as bloomin onion or onion blossom among many other names, is a whole onion (usually a Vidalia) that has been de-cored, sliced (usually with a machine cutter) to resemble a flower that has blossomed, breaded with batter, seasoned, & deep fried. It's usually served as an appetizer at restaurants. They're also a popular food item sold from concession trailers at festivals and fairs. They are usually served with a dip sauce of various ingredients or with plain ranch.

Blooming Onion Recipe

Here is a Blooming Onion Recipe you can make at home. No machine is needed, just a steady hand and a sharp knife. Be sure to use a big onion like a Vidalia onion. First, peel the onion and slice just enough off of one end of the onion so it still stays upright by itself. Then slice it vertically in 1/4 - 3/8 parallel slices, quiting 1/2" short of the bootom of the onion. Now rotate the onion 90 degrees and repeat. Next put the onion in ice water and let it sit for about one hour, which causes the bottom to open up some. Next, for the batter, mix 1/4 cup flour with 1 T o milk and 1 egg. Take the onion from the water and drain well. Then coat the onion with the batter and fry it in very hot oil until it turns golden brown. You can add a mix a dip sauce for it such as ranch or other.

Enjoy Your Bloomin Onion!
