I was a brand new waitress at a high end restaurant in downtown Seattle. It was known for excellent food and fast, gracious service. It was my first day serving on my own and my trainer told me I needed to be more friendly. He suggested that I act as if I had served the customer before by saying something like "Well Hello! You look really familiar, are you a regular?" So I did. Unfortunately, it wasn't a regular Joe-off-the street who would have been flattered...it was Detlef Schrempf! He was in a business meeting and looked really annoyed. I was sooooo embarrassed and never greeted a table like that again.
