Mel Blanc, KUOP Studios - Stockton, California
(San Jose, CA, USA)
While attending University of the Pacific, I did a radio show with some friends for KUOP, the college radio station. About four studios were being used for pre-taping everyone's shows for airing at a later time. In walks the legendary Mel Blanc, the voice of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Sylvester the Cat, Tweety Bird, the list goes on. He was in the station promoting the lecture he was to have that night in the Pacific Conservatory.
Of course, in all the studios we believed we were the next Prairie Home Companion or the next Monty Python. However, when Mr. Blanc walked into the main studio for his live on-air interview, all activity in all studios stopped and we went to watch this man perform. He was a short man, about 5' 2", but dressed impeccably in a three-piece suit and carrying a cane. To hear those classic voices come out of his mouth -- Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam, Daffy Duck, Sylvester, Tweety Bird, was a singular thrill. These were all timeless, beloved characters. Following the interview, we all waited outside the studio to meet Mr. Blanc. He was a perfect gentleman, gracious, perfectly attired, and was kind enough to speak to everyone and shake everyone's hand - myself included.
To this day, I love to tell people that I met Bugs Bunny!
