Neil Sedaka at Pine Knob Misic Theater - Arkansas
It's hard to believe it's been so many years, but around about 35 or so years ago, my friend and I went to see Neil Sedaka at Pine Knob Music Theater (now DTE Music Theater) for my birthday. His warm up act was Andy Gibb. We went with her younger sister and her friend. They went to see Andy; we were there to see Neil. The girls found out where Andy and Neil were staying in town, and begged us to go to the hotel, hoping for a chance to meet Andy. We went, and my friend and I sat out in the lobby. As the girls were looking around the main floor for him, he went walking past the two of us. We didn't say a word. In fact, when I asked her in a low tone of voice if she thought it was him, she said, and I will never forget this, "No, that's carpeting by Mohawk". She said that because she didn't want him to think we were even remotely interested in knowing who he was. I still chuckle when I think about it. The girls missed out. My friend and I then went and sat in the hotel bar. There we met the guy who did the lighting for Neil's shows. We sat and chatted with him for a while, and he offered to take us to Neil's room to meet him. He took us to Neil's room, knocked on the door, Neil came to the door, and we met him. The thing I remember most about that encounter is how short he was! He was a few sheets to the wind by then, but he was pleasant, and when we told him we'd seen him in concert that night for my birthday, he wished me a happy birthday. And we did get his autograph, although I don't even know where it is anymore. We weren't at the door very long, but it was long enough for me to remember the encounter very vividly after all these years.
