Since its inception in 1948, the Festival has blossomed into an extended weekend celebration that attracts more than 300,000 people.

Memorial Day Powwow Cherokee, North Carolina - May
Description: The Memorial Day Powwow draws more than 200 dancers and more than 2,000 spectators. Men & women compete for thousands of dollars in different age groups by performing in dances including traditional, grass, jingle, fancy and more. These events offer great opportunity for non-Natives to appreciate the diversity of Native cultures. Beyond this, the powwows are safe, family entertainment that includes everyone from young children to tribal elders. Many powwows promote themselves as a safe, drug-free environment.

Taste of Charlotte

Red White and Bluegrass Festival
Morganton, North Carolina - July
Description: The city of Morganton Parks and Recreation presents the Red White and Bluegrass Festival. The event includes a bluegrass camp for kids, four days of bluegrass music, sales of bluegrass instruments, music and other related bluegrass, plus food and drink sales. There's also the largest fireworks show in western North Carolina.

Description: The Carrboro Music Festival features music at various indoor and outdoor venues. The outdoor sites present music until dark, while some of the indoor venues go until midnight. The event presents a myriad of musical styles and different musical aggregations.

Brushy Mountain Apple Festival
North Wilkesboro, North Carolina - October
Description: The Brushy Mountain Apple Festival is one of the largest one-day arts and crafts festivals in the Southeast. Over 100 civic, church and other non-profit organizations participate in the festival. Over 160,000 people visit this festival during the day and it's free. The streets of downtown North Wilkesboro, NC are filled with over 425 arts and crafts, 100 food concessions, four different music stages consisting of blue grass, country, folk, gospel, and Appalachian heritage. Cloggers, folk dancers, rope skippers, and square dancers provide additional entertainment venues for festival goers. Appalachian Heritage crafts are highlighted such as woodcarving, chair making, soap making, pottery throwing, and quilting. Local apple growers set up throughout the festival selling their apples, apple cider, and dried apples.

North Carolina State Fair
Raleigh, North Carolina - North Carolina State Fairgrounds - October
