Charleston Historical Handmade Sweet grass Baskets. My name is Rebecca Gilliard, and it gives me great pleasure to introduce you to my Handmade Baskets. The art of basket weaving is a gift that was been passed down from generation to generation since its origination in West Africa. It is an appreciated art, over 400 years old and is still being made today by African descendants. As you view these photos, you will notice the many different styles and patterns available. You will also notice that no two patterns are alike. My baskets are made of sweet grass, palm leaf, bulrush, and long leaf pine needle. For further information or if you would like to place an order please feel free to contact me. You may reach me on (404) 259-1669 or (678) 576-1066. Thank you very much for your interest.

Today, basket making is centered in the Mt. Pleasant community. Basket stands along Hwy. 17 north allow basket makers to compete with retail markets, establish a direct contact between themselves and their patrons and develop new shapes from traditional baskets forms and ordinary objects. Basket makers living east of the Cooper River can also be found downtown Charleston, along Market, Broad, and Meeting Streets.

Basket making has become an art form practiced and controlled by women who no longer perform domestic and other work outside of their homes. The economic independence the basket making affords professional basket makers to work in their homes and make baskets. Men remain the primary gathers of sweet grass and their materials. Although the economic prosperity of tourism has been good for basket making, changes in ownership and use of land threatens the natural resources and human communities.
