A Root Beer Float is made from root beer with a scoop of vanilla ice cream added. The drink is best known for being served at root beer stands in a frosted mug or glass, but the beverage is also available at various restaurants, festivals, fairs, ballparks, theme parks, and carnivals. You can make them at home too.

History of Root Beer Floats
In the 1950’s there were numerous root beer stands with the traditional “car hops" serving floats in the frosted mug or glass, but today there are fewer and fewer of these. One that still remains is A&W. “National Float Day” was observed by A&W Root Beer on June 21, 2004. On this day, their 85th anniversary, a float was given away free with any purchase during a specified time on that day. Estimates by A&W prior to the event indicated they would probably serve over 900,000 free floats throughout the country on that day. RB Floats are also called “brown cows” or black cows.” Memories are many of the times when root beer stands were popular and families would jump in the car and head to the root beer stand for a frosty root beer or float on a hot summer day. Even Dippin Dots ice cream now has a root beer flavor!
