Description: For nature lovers, a visit to nearby Bombay Hook is an absolute must. This 15,000-acre wildlife reserve features wide expanses of unspoiled tidal salt marsh (one of the largest such areas in the US) as well as biomes ranging from timber swamps to grassy uplands. Established in 1937 as a primary stopping point for migratory birds, Bombay Hook sees an unbelievable number of winged passers-through during early fall and spring months, including snow geese and black-necked stilts.


Biggs Museum of American Art

Description: This gallery, on the second and third floors of the Delaware State Visitors Center, was made possible when Dover resident Sewell C. Biggs, an avid art collector, generously opened his collection of rare and fine art to the public. Biggs' donation includes Impressionist paintings by William Merritt Chase, sculpture by Charles Parks and even rare 18th-century furniture. Other galleries focus on family portraits, landscapes representing the Hudson River Valley School and works by local artists.

Description: The area's largest attraction, Dover Downs, is a figurative and literal playground for adults. Open daily, Dover Downs Slots is a nicotine-free casino that's home to some 2500 state-of-the-art nickel, quarter and half-dollar "one-armed bandits." Try your hand (and your luck) at Liberty Ball, Wild Taxi or Diamonds and Devils. Once you've had your go in the casino, you may want to check out the goings-on at the track. That's right: 140,000-seat Dover International Speedway, in addition to staging two major NASCAR events, hosts harness racing each year from October to April.

Description: Located in a historic building (1880) that formerly housed the Presbyterian Sunday School, this museum provides an accurate glimpse of life in Dover prior to 1900. An original stained glass window signed by William Reith hangs from the rear wall of the building, and the museum is arranged to resemble a 19th-century main street. In the print shop exhibit, you'll find a Pearl printing press that dates from 1897 and is still used to create maps and brochures for sale in the gift shop. Other areas re-create a pharmacy, a general store and a post office.


Air Mobility Command Museum

Description: Located within the confines of Dover Air Force Base, this museum preserves the area's long association with the armed forces. Among the historic aircraft on display are an HH-43 helicopter, a C-54M used during the Berlin Airlift and a B-17 Flying Fortress. Other interesting exhibits include an F-106 flight simulator, a Boeing C-17 cockpit display, a Hall of Heroes and a unique collection of airplane nose art. After walking the grounds and taking in all the sights, stop by the gift shop for a few mementos of your visit.

Description: The Wilmington Blue Rocks Minor League Baseball Team plays in Frawley Stadium at the Riverfront. They are the Carolina League Class A Advanced Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. Games are entertainment-filled even before the first pitch. On sponsor nights, fans collect promotional caps, cooler bags, bobble heads and such.

Description: Though born in Wilmington, E.R. Johnson always considered himself a son of Dover, and this museum pays tribute to him, his inventiveness and his business savvy. Johnson's ingenuity led him to create a compact phonograph that was all the rage in American households in the early 1900s. The Victrola Museum, made possible by the State of Delaware and Johnson's own family, includes in its collection antique phonographs designed by the Victor Talking Machine Company, Johnson's personal album collection, old photographs of famous singers recorded by the Victor Company and a few interactive exhibits.
