The Dixie Highway Band
One of the most original bands to hit Country Music in decades, this high energy band was raised on Traditional Country, Bluegrass, Southern Rock and Gospel music and list each of these styles as factors in their unique sound. Ranging in ages from 24 to 34 years old, the members of Dixie Highway Band spent much of their youth playing music at church singings and family get togethers. Four of the band members, Brian, Kris, Bret and Derek Jones are cousins, with the lead vocalist, Justin Reynolds, being a long time friend. The band has literally been playing music together all their lives. "I can't remember a time when we didn't play music," says lead guitarist, Brian Jones, "and we've been fortunate enough to take our music to people and places we never dreamed possible."
Dixie Highway Band is the perfect example of what makes a band - a band; teamwork. It all began in 1999 when the boys formed a band called, 'Cornerstone'. They started out playing at churches, weddings, private parties and over time the band worked their way into paying gigs at bars and nightclubs around their hometown of Maryville, Tennessee. The youngest member of the band, keyboard player, Derek Jones recalls, "When we first started playing bars, I was so young the band had to get permission from my parents to play the dates, and when we took a break, I had to go out and sit in the truck." Work was scattered but it allowed the band to grow as a unit, with each member evolving into superb singers, songwriters and musicians. It wasn't long before the band decided to turn things up a notch, beginning with a new musical approach and a new name for the band. When a songwriting friend suggested the name, 'Dixie Highway Band', the band fell in love with it. "We liked the sound of it from the get go," drummer, Kris Jones says, "and overnight we became the Dixie Highway Band." The Southeast and Midwest was the band?s area of demand, from Myrtle Beach, SC to Clarksdale MS, Indianapolis,
IN to Middlesboro, KY and points in between, the band worked hard without any help from a booking agency and no support from a record label. The band booked the dates, traveled in a van and worked in excess of 150 days a year, taking their music to the people. "I think that seasoned us out" made us to work harder and appreciate any kind of growth or success." says bass guitarist, Bret Jones. Dixie Highway Band is not your typical Country band. When these five musicians play together they create a very unique sound with a style all its own; a sound they've been perfecting night after night for the past 11 years. Their hard work did not go unnoticed as Dixie Highway show credits include shows with legendary artists like; Sammy Kershaw, Amy Grant, Carlene Carter, Sawyer Brown, Kansas, Foreigner, Little Texas, Joe Diffie and Diamond Rio. In 2009 Dixie Highway Band pooled their resources and released the self produced album, 'Highways & Heartaches'; an album rich in well written songs and one that promises to be some of their best work to date. When asked about making their own way, lead vocalist, Justin Reynolds says, "There's still plenty of radio stations in touch with what their listeners like and want to hear. We had a hunch, took a chance and thankfully our music appealed to them." Once you've seen and heard the Dixie Highway Band you too will agree that whatever the magic is, Dixie Highway Band has 'it' and brings it to the stage ever time they play.
